BOOK DISCUSSION: AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND
C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and G.K. Chesterton are some of the giants upon whose shoulders we stand. They have helped us build the foundation upon which we are building our understanding of Classical Christian Education. These men were advocates for the importance of the fairytale in a spiritual education, and, as we know, participated in the art of storytelling by writing their own fairytales that have become staples in classical Christian schools. Less known storytellers upon whose shoulders these men stood includes George MacDonald.
George MacDonald’s1871 fairytale, At the Back of the North Wind, follows the adventures of Diamond as he travels with the North Wind through the streets of London. Copies of this book can be acquired at the library or borrowed from the school, and a discussion of the story will be held at the Veranda Park library at 4pm on February 4th. This discussion is particularly aimed at the adult members of the Knox Community, so please consider yourself invited!
“When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
